About the Artist

Ebru is an ancient printmaking technique that is used in many forms in cultures  East and West. I have been very fortunate to have had the instruction of two contemporary masters of the art of Ebru. Feridun Ozgoren has been a continued inspiration in my work- I am grateful to have had his instruction and critique and encouragement in my work.  This  art form has allowed for an exploration  in the incorporation of traditional  themes  and explore and expand to incorporate more abstract works.

often incorporate traditional  caligraphy.  pigments including the incredible range of ochres  and ground stone such as lapis  and ancient  pigments such as cinnabar to achieve color ranges that are difficult with more contemporary means. Some works are also include contemporary acrylics, oils or qouache.

Themes are very personal, and often bring a visually symbolic enhancement in color and form to the calligraphic elements often incorporated into my work.

Islamic calligraphy is often referred to as music for the eyes, the meanings of the calligraphic works, both ancient and contemporary, often  incorporated into these prints also have deep meanings which are amplified and adorned by the use of this etheric form of art in rendering them.

Other forms and symbols from many  cultures are also included in my works.

The abstract is play and allows for expression of feelings that translate poorly to words, but are clear and vivid in  the visual renderings of these works in this ancient method.

I have worked in this medium for nearly 30 years and find that it is a ever enriching exploration and inspiration.
